With Success Comes A Price

I received my first notice from a copyright holder to remove a post. King Crimson to be exact. It has me a little scared. I had assumed I was safe posting bootlegs. Now, maybe not. I removed the post. What do I do now? Shut down the blog? Try to take it private again? I may have a way, but it may crap out like the last time. Your thoughts? Insights? Ideas? Send me an email at blind-pig@live.com or leave a comment under any post.

SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL 5:57
Compressed sound with "who..who's" way down in the mix. There are also afew bars edited from Keith's solo. Recorded at Olympic studios in June, 1968.

COUNTRY HONK 3:04
Missing the fiddle track and the familiar car horn. A transitional song that reveals the influences of the time. Gram Parson's turning Keith on to the soul of country music, and open tunings that were prevalent in the Country (Delta) Blues. Even the Rock version of the song reflects the impact of working with Ry Cooder during the "Let It Bleed" sessions, and Keith's enduring preference for Open G tuning that followed. His earlier efforts with open tunings were in open D & E on songs such as Child Of The Moon, Street Fighting Man (studio), and Prodigal Son.

GIMME SHELTER 4:22
A different mix and vocal. Lot's of bass in the opening bars of the song. Minus the Merry Clayton vocal. Recorded at Olympic Studios in May-June, 1969.

LOVIN' CUP 6:31
This could be the pre-Hyde Park studio version of the song. First surfaced on "Time Trip 1969-1973 Vol. 1" on Scorpio. Possibly from a May-June session at Olympic in 1969.

JIVING SISTER FANNY 3:14
Muffled sound with a different vocal take. Taylor burns it up.

HONKY TONK WOMAN 3:06
A studio version of the song containing the Paris verse that was only heard on early 70's live versions of the song. Also missing horn arrangements. Recorded at Olympic Studios in May-June, 1969.

ALL DOWN THE LINE (acoustic) 4:22
One of the great examples of how the band can evolve songs. Slow acoustic guitar version. First surfaced in the late 70's, but this has excellent clarity and corrected speed. Recorded at Elektra studios in LA, Oct., 1969.

ALL DOWN THE LINE (electric) 3:47
This is not the 7" single version of the song that usually shows-up on these recordings.
Different mix, and harp solo at 3:05. An Olympic Oct.-Nov., 1970 recording.

I DON'T KNOW THE REASON WHY 5:57
Not hard to guess why this hasn't been released. A shorter version of the song.

I'M GOING DOWN 3:04
Last of the "Metamorphosis" songs. It's the familiar guitar restart album version. Hard to say whether this is a production error or a retake by Keith.

YOU GOTTA MOVE 2:35
An alternate take of the Mississippi Fred McDowell classic. There is a lot of vocal reverb at the beginning, and the slide guitar goes into a "wah" effect at the end. A Muscle Shoals, Dec., 1969 recording. Part of the work at this studio is documented in the "Gimme Shelter" movie. Fred's original version of "You Got To Move" is found on "Fred McDowell Vol. 2" on Arhoolie Records. Order no. F 1027.

BROWN SUGAR #1 3:43
The earliest known version. Some of the fundamental tracks are inherited by later takes. Muscle Shoals, Dec., 1969.

BROWN SUGAR #2 4:29
Starts-stops-restarts-stops-restarts. Sloppy production by the manufacturer of a take that is very similar to the album.

BITCH 2:24
This is the album version of the song that starts off with some subtle cymbal tapping just before the start, and completely wipes out at 2:18 when the tape fouls-up.

GOOD TIME WOMAN 3:19
The well known first version of Tumbling Dice. An Olympic, Oct., 1970 recording.

SWAY 3:33
The 7" single version. A different mix and take.

SCHOOLBOY BLUES 3:30
The infamous let's make the last song we owe Decca a real good one! Recorded at Olympic in May, 1970. The origins and inspiration are explained by Marshall Chess in the opening 10 minutes of the movie with the same title. Interestingly, the song was rehearsed at the Woodstock rehearsals in preparation of the 1978 US Tour. Was Jagger reminded of this song by a copy of an unauthorized recording purchased while in New York? He commented on
unauthorized recordings at some length in an interview from the early 70's.

The Rolling Stones Blogspot Rapidshare 07/18/78 Tarrant County Convention Center Forth Worth, Texas, US @ 320

This show will blow your itty bitty minds.

Info From Original Poster: The Fort Worth recording from July 18th is the best sounding recording from The Rolling Stones' legendary 1978 Some Girls tour. It was previously released on Handsome Girls on The Swingin' Pig (TSP-CD-200-4), Handsome Girls on Dandelion (DL 030/031/032/033) and reprinted on Out On Bail on Vinyl Gang (VGP-278), Cowgirl Barbeque, Gorgeous Girls Redux on Sister Morphine (Morph 024), and From Lakeland To Oakland (RED 006/007). Last year it was included on the excellent four disc set Handsome Girls: Definitive Version on Devil Productions. Now Halcyon has issued No Flash No Gimmicks. This label by the Empress Valley people has an impressive track record in improving already great tapes and this title isn't a disappointment. Last year's Devil Productions version was great, but this one is dramatically better. The stereo seperation sounds wider, louder, more clear and generally more lively. Balance between the vocals, instruments and audience is close to perfect and the music seems to leap out of the speakers and pummel the listener that is rare even for an official release much less an underground recording like this. The recording is so vivid and clear it is easy to see Mick dancing around and Keith slashing the strings on the guitar.

This concert is close to the end of the tour and the set list is set with no surprises. "Satisfaction" and "Street Fighting Man" were played in some of the early shows but were dropped by then and the long crowd pleasers "Midnight Rambler" and "Sympathy For The Devil" were not played at all. The horn section and back up singers that accompanied the band in 1972 and 1975 are missing and the Stones are joined only by Ian Stewart and Ian MacLagan on various keyboards and pianos. Unlike previous tours where they were making social commentary and basked in the light of being cultural heros, this is the Stones as a rock and roll band playing intense music. As one person states, this is the Stones at their most slutty and sleazy. Others say this is the Stones at their most sloppy and drunk and was the reason for their more professional attitude when they toured three years later. Certainly some shows like the July 4th Buffalo concert were lackluster affairs. Since Fort Worth was being filmed and recorded they sound sober and deliver a blistering set. Seven of the ten songs on Some Girls constitutes the core of the set list (with "Some Girls", "Lies" and "Before They Make Me Run" being omitted). "Honky Tonk Women" has a reference to Dallas which pleases the audience. "Is there anybody in the balcony?" Mick asks before "When The Whip Comes Down".

The highlight of the first disc is "Miss You". It is curious that on this tour they played the 12" extended dance club version and the track last for eight and a half minutes with several instrumental interludes (but no harmonica). The Watts/Wyman rhythm section sounds like a pile driver as they pound the dance beat into the ground. In "Just My Imagination" Mick quips "we're gonna raise a family...ain't that cute?" Before an energetic version of "Respectable" Jagger says the now well known line "if the band is lacking in energy it is because they spent all night fucking...but we'll do our best." Doug Kershaw plays the fiddle on "Far Away Eyes" and his contribution is the only complaint one can have since he is buried far down in the mix and is hard to hear. Although this is a professional source lifted from the King Biscuit Flower Hour's DIR archives it is hard to say there are any bad versions. But No Flash No Gimmicks is such a dramatic improvement over previous releases it is hard to expect any improvements in the future. Like all other Halcyon releases the inserts are printed on very thick glossy paper with the star holograms implanted in the mix. The cover has the close up picture of Keith and a dramatic live shot in the inside. It can confidently be said that Halcyon have released the final word on the Fort Worth tape.

The Rolling StonesGot To Be Worked On! [Rover Records, 1CD]Various Olympic Studios Sessions 1966-1970

These days aspiring bootleggers have many sources to choose from to compile a new release, as Rover Records has done with this brand new 2007 bootleg. Stones sessions can be found on Yellow Dog's Black Box, Invasion Unlimited's series of outtakes, Scorpio's Time Trips, the numerous Japanese labels that specialise in repackaging. What's needed then is a "concept". Rover Records has come up with a nice idea of putting together tracks that "could have, should have" been released except some tracks "got to be worked on!" Sound quality on this boot is seriously fantastic.

Rover has focused on The Stones' brilliant period from 1966 to 1970 when Brian Jones was still coherent, creative and committed, at least half the time. The sessions span from Their Satanic Majesties, Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed to Sticky Fingers. Practically everything here has been released before say some reviewers but to these ears, if they have, I have not heard them in this quality. Perhaps the most bootlegged tracks here are the ones from the Beggar's album - outtakes of Stray Cat Blues, Parachute Woman, Factory Girl, Dear Doctor and No Expectations. Coming a close second are the outtakes from Sticky Fingers.

The two tracks that make their debut appearance on bootleg are Version 3 of Get Yourself Together and perhaps Yesterday's Papers. Here's a review from the net by "Another": "The first tracks are produced by Andrew Oldham: "Get Yourself Together" features Stu on piano and ends with Charlie still banging on the drums, while "Yesterday's Papers" has Jagger almost cracking in laughs while singing. "Sometimes Happy, Sometimes Blue" is the early take of "Dandelion" with Keith Richards on vocals. "Old King Cole" is an instrumental early take of "We Love You", produced by Glyn Johns. With "Child Of The Moon" that features Nicky Hopkins on this alternate mix version enters Jimmy Miller in the production seat."The version of "Jumping Jack Flash" comes from the first take recorded live in the studio, used for the promo film (without make up); on "Pays Your Dues" there is Rick Grech on electric violin while Roger Chapman is on background vocals. "Stray Cat Blues" is an alternate mix with ad lib vocals, louder bass and lead guitar. "No Expectations" feature Nicky Hopkins on piano and Stu on organ and starts with some studio dialogue, while you can hear Jagger mumbling the melody during the song. On "You Got The Silver" never have the acoustic guitars sound so wide open. "Wild Horses #1" is the 4th version which is a reworked take of the 3rd version without piano. Ry Cooder is on guitar on "Sister Morphine" while the alternate take of "Gimme Shelter" has no backing vocals. Nicky Hopkins' piano introduces differently "Loving Cup", the take of "Bitch" is the alternate mix, second version. No sax is featured on "Brown Sugar" and Jim Dickinson is featured on tack piano in the second version of "Wild Horses"."

The Rolling Stones Static In The Attic @ 192

The Rolling Stones
Static In The Attic [Midnight Beat, 1CD]

When this CD was released in 1996, like the previous year's Acetates, it amazed listeners with its exceptional sound, which still stands up today. One fan site said: "Clear stereo mix with no audible tape hiss. All sources used on this disc are impeccable!"

The CD opens with an undated interview with Mick Jagger regarding bootlegs. Jagger says: "I like bootlegs. There ought to be more bootleg records... because I don't like capitalist record companies... You shouldn't pay very much for bootleg records, that's the point. You should only pay half the price because no one is being paid." The clip ends off with Jagger saying: "Keep the price of bootleg records down."

According to Anthony J. Rzepela (http://faqs.org/faqs/music/rollingstones-faq/part2/), the interview was from Europe 1970. Rzepela also agreed on the sound quality. He noted: "Great quality outtakes, mostly from Emotional Rescue (1980) though some are earlier. Some are previously unheard and the others are probably in best ever quality."

At the time of the CD's release, fans must have been happy to find a good quality version of Claudine. Preceeding later celebrity killers such as OJ Simpson and Robert Blake, singer-actress Claudine Longet (the former wife of crooner Andy Williams) had killed her boyfriend but she was only sentenced to 30 days in jail. Some say she got off easy thanks to a high-powered defence team.

The song carried these lines: "Shot him once right in the chest, shot him twice in the head - Accidents will happen... Acidents will happen, won't they, Claudine?" The song was supposed to be included on Emotional Rescue but was taken off at the last minute. The song has yet to be officially released.

In an interview, Jagger explained why the band compromised and cut the track. "I don't mind being sued," Jagger said, "but I don't want the album to be withdrawn [after] it goes out."
