From Wikipedia: Superchunk was formed in 1989 in the town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, by Mac McCaughan (guitar and vocals), Laura Ballance (bass), Chuck Garrison (drums), and Jack McCook (guitar). Initially, the band went by the name Chunk (original drummer Chuck Garrison received some junk mail with his name misspelled as "Chunk" Garrison, and the name stuck), and their first single was released under the Chunk moniker. [1] After adding the "Super" prefix to their name, the first official Superchunk single, "Slack Motherfucker," followed in 1989 on Merge Records, founded by Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance. Both releases were well-received, and Superchunk would release its debut self-titled album in 1990 on Matador Records to more critical acclaim.

Jack McCook decided to leave the group after the release of the first album, Superchunk, and Connecticut-born James Wilbur was recruited to take over guitar duties. In spite of the ensuing bidding war that emerged between major record labels in the aftermath of the album's release, Superchunk decided to stay independent, sticking with Matador Records for their second, just as critically lauded LP, No Pocky for Kitty. No Pocky for Kitty was recorded in Chicago by Steve Albini in 1991. Chuck Garrison left the band a few weeks before the record’s release, and Jon Wurster was brought on board for drums.

The band put out one more record for Matador, On the Mouth in 1993, and then opted to release its own records, through Merge Records. The next album, Foolish, brought further critical acclaim for the band in 1994. A second singles compilation (the first was 1992’s Tossing Seeds) came out in the summer of 1995. It was titled Incidental Music and contained most of their hard-to-find tracks (imports, B-sides, comp. tracks) released between 1991 - 1995.
Boston was the setting for Superchunk’s next album session. 1995’s Here’s Where the Strings Come In was recorded at the city’s Fort Apache Studios and slated for a fall release. The band toured hard for Strings all over the world as well as appearing on the Lollapalooza tour, scoring a minor hit with the “Hyper Enough” single and video.

After a brief hiatus and another Australian tour, the band released a limited-edition EP called The Laughter Guns. The band then started the writing process for what would become Indoor Living. Recording commenced in Bloomington, Indiana’s Echo Park Studios with Chapel Hillian John Plymale co-producing with the band. Superchunk stretched out a bit on Indoor Living, expanding their sound by adding some new instruments to the mix: piano, organ, vibes and more. The album was by far their most adventurous and at the same time their most accessible to date. [2]

Superchunk delivered Come Pick Me Up, their 7th full-length studio release in 1999. Recording in Chicago at Electrical Audio Studios with the legendary producer Jim O’Rourke. Superchunk continued the expansion and growth of their sound that started with Foolish, pushing themselves to new heights of creativity.

In 2001, the band released Here's to Shutting Up, their most recent full-length studio album.

From the Merge Records 5th Anniversary party, they were the last of five bands on night two of the three night event. Great set.

Wikipedia says: Luna was a Dream Pop/Indie Pop band formed in 1991 by Dean Wareham after the breakup of Galaxie 500, with Stanley Demeski and Justin Harwood (Demeski formerly of The Feelies and Harwood formerly of New Zealand band The Chills). They announced plans to break up in 2004, and played their final concert at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on February 28, 2005.

The original line-up was expanded with the addition of guitarist Sean Eden for their second album, 1994's Bewitched. Lee Wall replaced Demeski on drums in time for 1997's Pup Tent, and Britta Phillips of Belltower (also known as the singing voice of animated character Jem) joined when bassist Justin Harwood departed in 2000. Phillips and Wareham eventually became romantically involved.

In 1991 after the end of Galaxie 500's US tour supporting the Cocteau Twins, Dean Wareham told his bandmates Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang that he was quitting the band. Dean then signed a demo deal with Elektra Records and recorded a number of tracks with Mercury Rev drummer Jimmy Chambers. Some of these recordings were later released on the Anesthesia single on No.6 Records in the US and Mint Tea in the UK under the name Dean Wareham.

Elektra's VP of A&R, Terry Tolkin, was suitably impressed and Dean signed a deal with Elektra, and started pulling together a band. He first contacted Justin Harwood whom Dean had met while Justin was playing with The Chills and they recruited drummer Byron Guthrie, the trio recorded some more demos (produced by Dave Fridmann) and played a couple of live dates augmented by Mercury Rev guitarist Grasshopper. Guthrie was then replaced by former Feelies drummer Stanley Demeski and this line up recorded the first album Lunapark, produced by Fred Maher and released by Elektra under the name Luna² to avoid confusion with a new-age musician who was already using the name "Luna" (later an agreement was reached which allowed the band to use the name Luna).

Shortly after the release of Lunapark, the band placed an advertisement in the Village Voice for a guitarist, and Canadian former drama student Sean Eden was recruited. The new four-piece went into the studio and recorded a number of cover versions that would become the Slide EP and then toured the US. In the summer of 1993 the band landed the prestigious slot supporting the reformed Velvet Underground on their European tour after which they set about recording their second album. Bewitched was recorded in New York City and co-produced by the band with Victor Van-Vugt. Velvet Underground guitarist Sterling Morrison played guitar on two tracks. The album was released in 1994.

In 1995 the band went into Sorcerer Sound studio in New York City with producer Pat McCarthy and engineer Mario Salvati to record their third album Penthouse. The album featured the legendary guitarist Tom Verlaine (Television) on the tracks Moon Palace and 23 Minutes in Brussels. The album was released in August 1995 to critical acclaim with Rolling Stone declaring it one of the essential albums of the 90s[1]. The album featured a cover of Serge Gainsbourg's Bonnie and Clyde as a hidden track, the song featured Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab duetting with Dean Wareham. Bonnie and Clyde was released as a single in the UK and was named Melody Maker single of the week.

TonyTiger Review: I found this recording to be very interesting. I love music that challenges my mind. When I hear something that I am unsure of (I don't know if I like it or not), and it draws me back for repeated listens, well, for me I have found what I'm searching for. I don't know how to describe the words and music here. Everything must have a label, right. Something unique needs a unique label. So ... maybe jazz rock beatnik fusion? For me I hear a little Pere Ubu, some Fall, mixed together with some classic rock groove? All I know is I would love to see these guys in a dark bar with a pitcher of gin and tonics in front of me, anticipation high, not knowing what I am going to hear next. Good Luck, guys.
